Why Trade Unions Are Important

Trade union collective bargaining, samuel gompers labor unions, labour trade unions

Simply stated, trade unions are organizations whose workers share the same ideals and aspirations. Their aspirations or ideologies become the foundation of their movement and their guiding principles.

Many countries have allowed workers to form suitable unions that support them as well as bring them together by virtue of their ideals. Therefore, trade unions are a unifying bond to workers and they help them air their grievances. Workers should therefore understand that so much can be gained by forming sound unions. It’s upon workers to demand for their union’s transparency and openness so as to legitimize their voice.

Trade unions are different and serve different purposes. They help in carrying negotiations on behalf of employees so as to get them favorable deals such as improved working conditions, medical covers, etc. It would not be possible for every single employee to do this, but collectively through a single channel, they are able to talk to their employers.

In addition, with the unions looking into the welfare of their workers, they work by supporting the productivity of the workers. They help in organizing training workshops so as to enhance their workers’ skills at the workplace. Also, they hold forums to sensitize workers on changes going on in the market as well as educate them on pertinent matters that would benefit them in general. Further support, which may differ, may be given at personal levels. A member might get legal representation in case of litigation where an employer is involved.

Trade unions come in handy when there is need for the all important salary raise negotiation. They are well placed to conduct meetings and hold talks with relevant policy and decision makers. This ensures quality talks from both sides. Decisions made are then taken to serve the employer as well as employee.

Incase of a misunderstanding with the employer or a stalemate in negotiations where there is an obvious gross infringement of employees’ rights, then the trade union has the right to call for industrial action as it sees fit. This could be in form of ‘go slow strikes’, peaceful demonstrations or keeping off from work. The unity in action drives the point home more clearly to the employer.

The unity of workers of a trade union is great; they can make use of this advantage that is in their numbers for political advantage. This helps them to champion their causes on a wider and broader platform, the overwhelming support from workers notwithstanding. Many political careers have been birthed on similar situations. Workers can work together and support their own political representative to campaign for their causes. Unions can also make use of the same and enter in to financial agreements with institutions so as to help its workers.
